My Artistic Journey
Hi Everyone!
My passion for capturing the beauty of the natural world began with simple snapshots of family and vacations. It wasn’t until I embarked on my first trip to Africa in 2013—a trip I affectionately call “Photography Boot Camp”because I knew very little-that I discovered a true love for wildlife photography. What started as a desire to gather reference photos for my new oil painting hobby quickly blossomed into a lifelong pursuit.
That trip to Kenya changed my life forever. I fell in love with the vibrant wildlife and stunning landscapes, and through practice and upgraded equipment, I’ve returned to Africa on five safaris. My travels have taken me to Boiswana, Tanzania, India, Costa Rica, Chile, Alaska, Yellowstone, and locally to Virginia’s Chincoteague, Corolla, and Shenandoah National Park, capturing wildlife and native flora in their natural habitats. Living in Virginia Beach, I enjoy photographing local wildlife such as Ospreys nesting on the golf course, foxes, woodpeckers, herons, egrets, and marine life like dolphins, whales, and pelicans—all right in my backyard.
My photographs serve as the foundation for my oil paintings. I love to tell the stories behind each image—sharing the moment when I clicked the shutter and then translating that emotion and light onto canvas. My art has enabled me to connect with others who share a love of nature and animals. Whether speaking at community meetings, showcasing my work at The Virginia Beach Art Center, or at the Beach Gallery, I have the privilege of sharing my passion. Many of my patrons have personal stories linked to the animals I paint, from a young girl admiring cheetahs to an inspiring encounter with Great Egrets watching over a sick loved one.
I am committed to the preservation of wildlife. Having witnessed firsthand how many species are disappearing, I see my art and photography as a way to inspire others to cherish and protect our fragile planet.
Although I began my artistic journey later in life—taking my first drawing class at age 50—my style today is vibrant and colorful, reflecting my love for the natural world. I continue to explore light, color, and life through my wildlife and floral subjects, always seeking to capture the wonder and beauty of nature.
